Visva-Bharati Teaching Recruitment 2026

Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, has issued Advertisement No. 03/2026 for direct recruitment to teaching positions at the Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor levels. Eligible Indian citizens with the required academic, research or professional-art credentials should apply online through the Chayan portal.

The recruitment offers 14 posts across departments and Bhavanas: one Professor, six Associate Professors and seven Assistant Professors. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Professor (Sculpture): Applicants must meet either the academic-scholar route or the professional-artist route. Under the academic route, candidates need a doctoral degree, at least 10 years of teaching at a university or college and/or research experience at a university or national-level institution, at least six publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals, and a research score of 120 under Appendix II, Table 2. Under the artist route, candidates need a relevant master’s degree, ‘A’-grade status as an AIR or Doordarshan artist, 10 years of outstanding performance in the specialisation, significant contributions and the ability to guide research. They must also have participated in national or international seminars, conferences, workshops or concerts, or received national or international awards or fellowships, and be able to explain the subject logically and teach its theory with illustrations. Specialisation in Sculpture is desirable.

Associate Professor (Geography, English and Botany; Sl. Nos. 02–05): Applicants need a good academic record, a Ph.D. in the concerned, allied or relevant discipline, and a master’s degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade. They must also have at least eight years of teaching and/or research experience in a position equivalent to Assistant Professor at a university, college, accredited research institution or industry; at least seven publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals; and a research score of 75 under Appendix II, Table 2. For the Botany post, an M.Sc. in Botany with a specialisation in any branch of Botany is desirable.

Associate Professor (Esraj and Painting; Sl. Nos. 06–07): Candidates may qualify through either of two routes. The academic route requires a good academic record, a doctoral degree, high-level performing ability, eight years of teaching at a university or college and/or research at a university or national-level institution at a level equivalent to Assistant Professor, and a significant contribution to knowledge evidenced by quality publications. The artist route requires a master’s degree in the relevant subject and highly commendable professional achievement, ‘A’-grade AIR or Doordarshan artist status, eight years of outstanding performance in the specialisation, experience in designing new courses and/or curricula, participation in national-level seminars, conferences or concerts at reputed institutions, and the ability to explain the subject logically and teach theory with illustrations. For Painting, an excellent academic record together with active professional art practice—including solo exhibitions and participation in curated national and international group exhibitions—is desirable. Extensive knowledge of art theory and the ability to connect theory with practical studio disciplines are also desirable.

Assistant Professor (Physics, Agricultural Extension and Odia; Sl. Nos. 08–10): The standard academic route requires a master’s degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in a relevant, allied or concerned subject from an Indian university, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university, plus NET conducted by UGC or CSIR, or a UGC-accredited equivalent such as SLET/SET. Candidates holding a Ph.D. awarded in accordance with the applicable UGC regulations of 2009 or 2016 and their amendments may be exempt from NET/SLET/SET. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with a Ph.D. from a foreign university or institution ranked among the world’s top 500 at any time by QS, Times Higher Education or ARWU of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. For Physics, a specialisation in Electronics in an M.Sc. in Physics, or an M.Sc. in Electronics, is desirable; the stated specialisation requires at least two elective papers in Electronics at master’s level or three years of research experience in Electronics. For Agricultural Extension, desirable qualifications are a four-year B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture or B.Sc. Agriculture (Hons.), an M.Sc. (Ag.) in Agricultural Extension Education, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Extension and Communication or Extension Education, and a Ph.D. in one of those fields. For Odia, specialisation in Modern Odia Literature and research publications in UGC-listed or peer-reviewed journals are desirable.

Assistant Professor (Rabindra Sangit, Textile, Graphic Art and Classical Vocal Music; Sl. Nos. 11–14): The academic route requires a master’s degree with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in the relevant subject, or an equivalent degree from an Indian or foreign university, as well as NET conducted by UGC or CSIR, or a similar UGC-accredited test such as SLET/SET. The notification also sets out the applicable Ph.D. qualification route under the UGC regulations of 2009 or 2016 and their amendments. Alternatively, a traditional or professional artist with highly commendable achievement may qualify with a bachelor’s degree, study under a noted or reputed traditional master or artist, ‘A’-grade AIR or Doordarshan artist status, the ability to explain the subject logically, and adequate knowledge to teach theory with illustrations. For Textile, in-depth knowledge of textile fibres, fabric structures and structural textile design, handloom weaving including Jacquard figuring and designing, and proficiency in Textile CAD are desirable. Specialisation in Printmaking or Graphic Art is desirable for the Graphic Art post.

For Assistant Professor posts, the academic score under Appendix II, Table 3A is used for interview shortlisting; selection itself is based only on interview performance. Candidates must meet the essential qualifications and experience by the last date of application. The notification does not specify an upper age limit for these teaching posts.

Applicants employed by a government body, autonomous body, university or other government-funded organisation should apply through the proper channel. Alternatively, they may submit a formal No Objection Certificate at interview if called. No application mode other than online is accepted.

Salary & Pay Scale

Pay is set under the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. The advertised entry pay is INR 144,200 for Professor, INR 131,400 for Associate Professor and INR 57,700 for Assistant Professor.

Selection Process

If application numbers are high, Visva-Bharati may limit the interview shortlist to a reasonable number, with a stated 1:15 ratio. Shortlisting is based on qualifications and experience, using the academic and research score under Appendix II, Table 2 and Table 3A of the UGC Regulations 2018. Final selection is based only on interview performance. The process also includes verification of testimonials, antecedents and past service, and selected candidates must undergo police verification before or after joining. No travel or daily allowance is payable for attending a written test or interview. Candidates called for interview who are staying abroad may be permitted by the University to attend through Skype or another audio-visual link.
