Selection Process

The selection for HPAS Recruitment 2026 is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview). In the Preliminary stage, there are two objective-type papers—General Studies (Paper-I) and Aptitude Test (Paper-II)—each carrying 200 marks with 100 questions. Aptitude Test (Paper-II) is qualifying in nature with a minimum qualifying mark of 33%, while admission to the Main Examination is based solely on Paper-I marks. Negative marking applies in the Preliminary Examination: 1/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer, multiple answers are treated as wrong, and there is no penalty for unattempted questions. Candidates scoring zero or negative marks in Paper-I will not qualify, and approximately 20 times the number of vacancies are called for the Main Examination. It is mandatory to appear in both Preliminary papers; otherwise, the candidate is disqualified.

The Main Examination includes compulsory papers and one optional subject. The compulsory papers are English (Paper-I), Hindi (Paper-II), Essay (Paper-III), and General Studies papers (Paper-IV to Paper-VI). The optional subject consists of two papers (Paper-VII and Paper-VIII). To qualify, candidates must score at least 40% in each of the English and Hindi papers and 45% in the aggregate of the other papers (excluding English and Hindi). Marks in English and Hindi are used only for qualifying and are not counted for overall ranking. The number of candidates called for the interview is limited to not more than three times the number of notified vacancies. All Main Examination papers are of 3 hours duration.

In the Personality Test stage, the interview assesses personal suitability, mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, social traits, and knowledge of the customs, manners, and dialects of Himachal Pradesh. Final merit is determined based on the combined marks of the Main Examination (written) and the Personality Test. Preliminary Examination marks are not counted for final ranking.

Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements should complete their ORA registration, document upload, and fee payment well before 22 September 2026 (11:59 PM) to avoid last-minute issues.
